Moon cakes are the food of the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is also known as harvest cakes, reunion cakes, etc. Moon cakes were originally offerings to worship the moon god. Since its development, eating moon cakes and admiring the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival have become a must-have custom for the Mid-Autumn Festival in all parts of China. Moon cakes symbolize reunion, and people regard them as festive food and use them to offer sacrifices to relatives and friends.

 

Moon cakes have a long history. The term moon cake was first included in the Southern Song Dynasty Wu Zimu's "Meng Liang Lu". Moon cakes have been integrated with the food customs of various places, and the Cantonese, Jin, Beijing, Su, Chao, and Dian moon cakes have been developed, which are loved by people from all over China.


There are many ancient poems related to moon cakes. The great poet Su Dongpo in the Song Dynasty praised moon cakes with verses. From the verse, we can know that moon cakes in the Song Dynasty were filled with ghee and sugar. In the Ming Dynasty, the custom of eating moon cakes at Mid-Autumn Festival became more popular. Since the first day of the eighth lunar month, there have been people selling moon cakes. On August 15th, every family will offer moon cakes and fruits.

 

Moon cakes can be divided into walnut kernels, almonds, sesame kernels, melon seeds, hawthorn, lotus seed paste, red beans, jujube paste, etc., which are good for our health. These stuffing are beneficial to soften blood vessels and prevent arteriosclerosis. And some moon cakes also contains minerals, which will help us improve our immunity.


Mooncakes can be divided into four major types according to their origin and characteristics: Cantonese-style mooncakes, Beijing-style mooncakes, Soviet-style mooncakes and Chaozhou-style mooncakes. Cantonese-style moon cakes are thin, soft, sweet and full of fillings. Beijing-style moon cakes have exquisite appearance, thin and soft skin, distinct layers and attractive flavor. Soviet-style moon cakes are crispy, with heavy oil but not greasy, sweet and salty. The taste of Tide-style mooncakes is sweet and not greasy and the taste is soft.
